Landscaping at the Carolina Beach Marina Park
With the help and support of the town of Carolina Beach, Island Women have relandscaped the Carolina Beach Marina.  This is an ongoing project that will continue to beautify the area year after year.  We have at least two group clean-up days  (spring and fall) and then passionate, individual landscaping members periodically maintain the gardens.
Boardwalk Makeover
During the 2008 revamp of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk, Island Women were instrumental.  We were a large part of the volunteer work force and helped with the planting and the painting of the flower boxes, etc.  For 2009, Island Women will take this role again as well as helping with the new landscape design for the Gazebo area.

The corner at Cape Fear Blvd. and Lake Park Blvd.
Island Women worked with the Town of Carolina Beach in the spring of 2008 to turn these corners into beautiful gardens.  Now maintained by the Township, the gardens are a proud accomplishment.

Sea Turtle Nest
Island Women welcome turtle nest No. 1

The first loggerhead turtle nest on Carolina Beach was discovered just after 6 a.m., Wednesday, June 30 near Golden Sands and the Tiki Bar. The same mother did a false crawl around 1 a.m. farther up the beach.

A half dozen Island Women, led by Pat Holleman, Anne Terry and Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project coordinator Nancy Busovne moved the nest of 72 eggs closer to the dunes near the beach access ramp.

In 50-55 days Island Women volunteers will dig a trench to the ocean and begin sitting the nest around day 60. How soon the nest hatches depends on the weather, mostly how hot the days are. Nancy will watch the hatch patterns of three Kure Beach nests laid earlier this season to estimate the arrival of Nest 1 loggerheads on Carolina Beach.

Last Year's Historic Nest: The first Leatherback Turtle Nest ever recorded on Carolina Beach hatched the evening of September 14, 2009 .  A group of Island Women, who had been watching the nest, were present for the historic hatching of 70 Leatherback turtles.  It was a thrill to be part of helping these endangered sea turtles make it to the ocean to begin their long and tenuous journey.
